Planning a Newborn Session with Siblings (without the stress)
Including siblings in your newborn session can feel like a tender balancing act — one that’s filled with so much meaning, and yes, one that can be beautifully calm and completely stress-free.
At Fieldstone Studio, I’ve thoughtfully designed every part of the experience to support your whole family — from the swaddled newborn in your arms to the curious toddler at your feet. Whether this is your first time wrangling little ones for photos or you’ve done it before, this guide will walk you through what to expect, offer a few helpful tips, and reassure you that you’re in gentle, capable hands. We’ll create something meaningful — together.
1. Set Realistic Expectations — For Everyone
Welcoming a new baby is a huge adjustment, especially for older siblings. During your newborn session with siblings, it’s completely normal for little ones to be curious, unsure, or even a bit emotional. That’s why I take a relaxed, child-led approach to sibling portraits — honoring their unique personalities and energy.
We’ll start with gentle connection, no pressure to “perform.” Often, the most cherished images are the unposed, quiet moments — a hand resting gently on baby’s swaddle, a proud smile, a curious peek into the bassinet.
Tip: Let your child know there will be time to take pictures, and also time to play, cuddle, or step away. They don’t have to be “on” the whole time.

2. Timing is Everything
For toddlers and young children, energy (and patience) tends to be best earlier in the day. That’s why I schedule sibling involvement at the very beginning of your session. After we capture those sweet sibling interactions, they’re welcome to play nearby, have a snack, or head off with a parent or caregiver so we can focus on baby-led portraits.
This structure makes the experience easier on everyone — especially mom — and keeps the focus on meaningful connection, not keeping little ones still.
3. Wardrobe That Works for Everyone
When planning outfits for your newborn session with siblings, simplicity is key. Neutrals, soft textures, and coordinated tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family’s connection. I’ll help guide you in selecting pieces that complement one another and feel authentic to your style — often delivering wardrobe items for children directly to your home ahead of time.

4. Make it Special for Older Siblings
Being part of a newborn session can be a big moment for an older sibling — and a wonderful opportunity to help them feel seen, important, and proud of their new role.
We might capture a few portraits of them on their own, or ask for their “help” swaddling the baby or holding a blanket. These little moments go a long way in fostering connection — and often become their favorite photos to look back on.
5. Leave the Stress Behind- That’s My Job
You’re already doing so much in this season of life. My job is to make your portrait experience feel easy and enjoyable. I plan every detail of your session with intention — from the session flow to wardrobe coordination to toddler-friendly pacing — so you don’t have to worry about a thing.
Whether your child is feeling joyful, shy, or totally disinterested, I’m right there with patience, flexibility, and strategies tailored to little ones. And I promise — we will get images you love.
