Fall in New England is pure magic—the crisp air, golden leaves, and glowing sunsets make it one of the most beautiful seasons for portraits. It’s also the time of year when I hear the question most often: what to wear for fall family photos?
The right wardrobe makes such a difference, helping bring in the warmth, coziness, and textures that make fall so special. To take the guesswork out of planning, I’ve curated three style boards full of inspiration for families—soft textures, rich autumn hues, and layers that feel both elevated and comfortable.

Start with Warm, Neutral Tones
Fall light is golden and romantic, and it pairs beautifully with a palette of warm neutrals—think cream, camel, chocolate, and earthy greens. Add depth with rust, terracotta, stormy blue or dusty rose. These tones coordinate beautifully outdoors without feeling too “matchy.”
Texture is your best friend this season—wool, corduroy, knits, and soft cotton all add dimension and photograph beautifully.

Build Around Mom’s Outfit
As always, I recommend starting with mom. Your look sets the tone for the whole family. Whether you gravitate toward a sweeping dress in a warm floral, a tailored knit midi, or a chic layered sweater-and-skirt combo, choose something that feels like you and makes you feel radiant. Once mom’s look is in place, styling the rest of the family becomes effortless.

Coordinating the Family
Instead of matching, think in layers of tone and texture. Dad might wear a henley under a quilted jacket with chinos in olive or tan. Littles look darling in cozy knits, corduroy jumpers, or a classic suspender set. The key is balance—coordinated without being too styled.
Comfort Comes First
Fall temperatures can shift quickly, so I always recommend layering. Lightweight knits, cardigans, or jackets not only look stylish but also keep little ones happy. Neutral boots, moccasins, or leather flats are perfect finishing touches that don’t distract from your family’s connection.
